ATTORNEY General Ryan Pinder said officials are working at legislation that would eliminate inequalities related to citizenship access.

The Davis administration has long promised to amend the Bahamas Nationality Act to accomplish this, but has not given a timeline.

The Privy Council affirmed in May that children born to Bahamian fathers are Bahamians at birth, regardless of their mother’s nationality.

People born outside The Bahamas to a Bahamian mother and foreign father are not automatically citizens.

Additionally, Bahamian women do not have the same rights as men when it comes to allowing the foreigner they marry to get citizenship.

During a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday, Mr Pinder said a final review is being done on the proposed legislation.

“I would say standby,” he said. “You should be informed of some things very shortly. We’re working on a framework, an amendment to the legislation that deals solely with the remaining areas of inequalities that exist. We’re finalising that now, doing final review, and hopefully, we’ll meet before cabinet in the coming weeks on that issue.”
