A 57-year-old man was sent to prison yesterday after being accused of raping a 21-year-old woman earlier this month.
Gary Cooper faced Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain on a charge of rape stemming from an alleged sexual assault against a woman in New Providence on January 14.
As this is an indictable offence, Cooper was not required to enter a plea yesterday.
He was told that his matter would be transferred to the Supreme Court by way of a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI).
The accused was told that while the magistrate lacked the jurisdiction to grant him bail he had the right to apply for it in the Supreme Court.
He was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until then.
Cooper is expected to receive his VBI on April 27.
