PROGRESSIVE Liberal Party chairman Fred Mitchell said the West Grand Bahama and Bimini by-election will happen after the PLP’s convention next month.

He confirmed the election must happen by November 25.

The Free National Movement’s Bishop Ricardo Grant, the PLP’s Kingsley Smith and the Coalition of Independents’ Lincoln Bain are expected to vie for the seat to replace Obie Wilchcombe, who died unexpectedly last month. Independent candidate Terneille Burrows has also said she will run.

Mr Mitchell said he does not expect anyone to challenge Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis and Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper for leadership positions at the PLP’s convention.

He acknowledged speculation that Shane Gibson may run for chairman. Mr Mitchell did not confirm whether he will seek that position again.

“Let’s see what happens. When the deadline passes, I will make a formal announcement, but I will not venture beyond that right now,” he said.

Former Golden Gates MP Shane Gibson said during a recent JCN interview that it is “very possible” that he will pursue a position at the convention. According to the party’s rules, prospective candidates must apply by Thursday, 14 days before the convention.

Mr Mitchell said the PLP is united despite Friday’s turbulent National General Council meeting.
