A MAN awaiting a murder trial was remanded into custody after he was accused of having a banned assault rifle near his home last week.

Magistrate Lennox Coleby on Friday arraigned Brinton Thompson, 36, on possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of dangerous drugs and two counts of possession of ammunition.

Prosecutors allege that police found a banned a black and brown high powered rifle with the serial number erased along with 16 7.62mm rounds and ten .223 rounds in an abandoned structure near the defendant’s residence in New Providence on January 28.

On that same date 1 1/8oz of marijuana was allegedly found in the defendant’s home.

Thompson pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Lincoln McKenzie, who served as the prosecutor, objected to the defendant’s bail. He cited the risk to public safety and that the defendant has pending charges.

Thompson was on release awaiting trial for murder after he was alleged to have shot and killed Randino Pratt outside Corner Pocket Bar on St James Road on November 12, 2011.

Thompson will be remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until his bail hearing on February 3.

Ian Cargill represented the accused.
