Maitland “Bonefish Dundee” Benjamin Lowe

unknown - unknown

Maitland “Bonefish Dundee” Benjamin Lowe, 70, of Hope Town, Abaco passed away peacefully in his home on April 22, 2018. Maitland was born in Cherokee Sound on January 25, 1948 to the late Bessie Mae Sawyer Lowe of Cherokee and the late Benjamin “Curtis” Lowe, formerly of Green Turtle Cay. At 6 years old, Maitland’s family moved from Cherokee to Little Harbour to man the lighthouse. This is where he and his siblings grew up and became so in tune with nature. Maitland and his siblings would fish and hunt daily for the families meals. The “creeks” of Little Harbour was their back yard and Maitland knew every inch of them. He could spot the bonefish with ease like a hawk zooming in on his prey. Fifteen years later, the family moved to Hope Town where Maitland continued to fish and make a name for himself as a legendary bonefish guide, fishing those same flats he explored as a child as well as others. He had a tough and rugged exterior but a heart of gold and a wonderful sense of humour. He would give or do anything for anyone who needed something. Maitland loved his family, the land and the sea. He was the salt of the earth and it is befitting that he passed away on “Earth Day.”

Maitland is survived by his wife, Mercedes Lowe, their children, Bessie Elizabeth Lowe and Maitland “Maity” Benjamin Lowe II of Hope Town, his son, Carson Hartley Lowe of Jacksonville, Florida, brother and sister-in-law, Robert Talmage Lowe and Karen Huff-Lowe, nephews Livingston “Stony” and Elijah “Eli” Lowe of Hope Town , sister and nephew, Lois Fae Fuller, Fabian Cash of St. Petersburg, Florida, niece, Sarah Jane Leo (nee Lowe) and great niece, Lily Aurora Munro of Carpinteria, California, his mother-in-law, Leonor Martinez of Habanna, Cuba, sister-in-law Elizabeth Fontana of Los Angeles, California, niece Eleanne Sweeting of Freeport, niece Camilla Fontana, nephew Mateo Fontana of Terni, Italy, brother-in-law Roberto Leon, sister-in-law Maylin Gonzales, niece Caroline Leon, all of New Jersey.

In addition to his parents, Maitland is predeceased by his brother, Hartley Curtis Lowe, and nephew, Hartley Curtis “Curt” Lowe Jr. and his father-in-law, Jose Antonio Leon Castro of Habanna, Cuba. Maitland leaves behind a multitude of additional family and friends who loved him dearly but are too numerous to name.

A “Celebration” of Maitland’s life will be held at St. James Methodist Church on Saturday May 5, 2018 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Maitland’s name to either: The Bilney Lane Children’s Home, P.O. Box N 205, Nassau, Bahamas and/or Every Child Counts, P.O.
