Thelma Harriet (Brown) Knowles, aged 95 years, died peacefully on Tuesday, September24th at her East Bay Street residence, surrounded by her precious family.
Born in Nassau, The Bahamas, in 1924, she lived a life of humility and grace, always giving selflessly to others and practicing the strong family values instilled in her as a child.
At the young age of 9, having lost her mother, Thelma assumed the role of looking after her two younger brothers, setting a strong foundation for the later nurturing of her own children.
Thelma attended Queen’s College and proudly told of her sporting successes. As one of the oldest alumna, she continued to support the school, following its growth and achievements with great interest.
In 1948 Thelma married Arthur Robinson (Jack) Knowles and they were blessed with four children. Like Jack, Thelma’s devotion and commitment to her family was unconditional. Nothing gave her more pleasure than being surrounded by her beloved children and their ever-growing families.
Up to the time of her passing, Thelma faithfully attended Ebenezer Methodist Church, having served as a choir member and organist for many years. Her strong faith in God and love for her church never waivered.
Thelma loved life and lived it to the fullest. And in return she was loved by all whom were blessed to have known her.
She will be sadly missed by her four children, daughters Christine Woodman (Johnny) , Anne Lever (Ian) and Elizabeth Howard, son Arthur Robinson Knowles; brother Christopher L. Brown (Helen); grandchildren: Colin Lightbourn (Natasha) Rachel Bayles (Dwain), Heather Peterson (Nicholas), Robyn Rolle (Calvin) , Andrew Howard, Ryan Lightbourn (Caitlin) Thomas Lever (Iris), Michael Lever (Catheryn) and David Howard (Katie); great grandchildren, Emily, William and Lilly Bayles, Nicholas, Morgan and Harper Peterson, Isabella, Isla and Ava Lightbourn, Liam and Luca Lightbourn, Amelia and Rosie Rolle, and Abigail Howard; numerous nieces and nephews of the Brown and Knowles family; devoted caregivers Dorinda Farquharson, Rosemarie Castelo, Clervius Desir, Erica Rolle, Mikus Mikula, Dr. Indira Grimes & Dr Christine Chin, Gloria Adderley; and a host of friends including Mike Lightbourn, Derek Howard, Nobert & Stephanie Boissiere, the Ebenezer Methodist Church Family, Family Guardian Insurance Company Management and Staff, The Nassau Yacht Club members and Management, and the members of the Inner Wheel Club of East Nassau.
Thelma was predeceased by her husband Arthur Robinson (Jack) Knowles, her brothers, John Sidney Brown and Donald Morgan Brown.
A joyous celebration of Thelma’s life will be held at Ebenezer Methodist Church, East Shirley Street, Nassau at 3pm on Tuesday October 1st.
Reverend Milton Lightbourne, Minister of Ebenezer Methodist Church will officiate and interment will follow in Ebenezer Methodist Cemetery, East Shirley Street, Nassau.
