Police: 'No need to be afraid of crime'
Who is the Chief Superintendent trying to kid when he says Bahamians "have no reason to be afraid? When a person can't enjoy themselves at a public place on West Bay Street at 8 o'clock in the evening without being sprayed by bullets from a presumably automatic weapon then we have every right to be afraid. Ordinary people are becoming more and more afraid to venture out after dark. Last night there were reports of drivers on East West highway having their windshields smashed by thugs throwing rocks from the roadside. On what grounds should we not be afraid? New Providence has become a dangerous, lawless place and many people now live their lives in a very restricted way. There is very little quality of life anymore and the age old slogan "it is better in The Bahamas" has become completely redundant. What we could do without at this time is top policemen treating the public like fools. People are scared and they have every right to be scared. What is the government and the Police Force going to do to defeat these armed criminals?

Great ideas... I would honestly email these to both Christie (not sure if it'll help now) and to Dr. Minnis. We have a very big problem with inefficiency. It would be a new way of thinking for us but we're in a crisis. Let the general population relax and live with an 'island' attitude. Our police, marines, and other first responders need to be run in world-class fashion.
Further to 'F'... build a brand new prison and renovate the existing Fox Hill as a centralized Jail/Remand/Detention center. No matter how you feel, Fox Hill is not fit for any kind of human occupancy. The Commissioner and Prime Minister are constantly seeking the public's assistance. There are decent Bahamian people who don't cooperate because they don't want their children and grandchildren in Fox Hill. If we had a new facility that could reasonably house prisoners, the public might be more inclined to help.
Further to 'J'... acquire and train gun sniffing dogs (they are trained on the scent of gunpowder and residue) Keep them in the communities, ports of entry, and on defence force vessels to assist during at-sea inspections.

The Crime Problem - Perhaps we could try raising and educating our children to be law abiding, decent, and community loving Christian people. It would save us a lot of money and a lot of blaming others for our problems. The realities on the ground do not suggest that good parenting and good education are valued much here. Otherwise, we'd be seeing better results. Wouldn't we?

Owl #1. What's the point of staring at the fire? I bet they haven't even planned for a change in wind direction yet.

Why does it almost always seem that we are always operating in crisis mode? When will they ever conclude that there's a need to operate proactively as opposed to retroactively. Invest HEAVILY in all your emergency services (i.e. Fire, Airport Department, ambulance agency), equipment (not just the vehicle), continuous regular training refresher and learning new procedures, man power, contingency plans, acquire a bambi bucket (water bucket) let coast guard helicopter and DEA chopper to drop water from the air.

$156m owed in student loan debts
I agree that if there's monies owing that people should pay. However as the minister seeks to recoup these funds I ask that he bares in mind why there might be funds owing. Many many college graduates are unable to find a job because of the following reasons;
(a) A number of businesses turn down college graduates because they either don't want to pay or cannot afford to pay qualified people. Some persons have been told point blank, "I cant afford to pay you",
(b) In many government agencies old retired persons have been brought back to work or consult, clogging the system, preventing the promotion of those currently employed which would in turn create vacancies for new qualified persons to be employed who could have otherwise opted to stay abroad rather than returning home to "give back" only to be disappointed.
(c) in 2015 2000 persons lost their jobs in one day!! Many of these persons were not re-employed.
(d) What about those owing who reside in Grand Bahama where persons can barely keep the electricity on because of a lack of employment.?
So again while I understand 156 million is good chunk, your threat may have just added undue anxiety to the many who genuinely cannot repay! Don't forget to be human in your quest!!

24-hour wait in A&E flood crisis
A few years ago when Doctor's Hospital (WEST) was on the market for sale, I suggested the government purchase the facility along with surrounding properties. The idea was to use the existing facility as a foundation (stepping stone) and build out a new. state of the art, full service hospital over a period of years. Because of the location, the hospital could provide both local and private care and while taking some of the burden off the Princess Margaret Hospital, it can eventually generate revenue for the government. No only is it unwise to have all of the emergency care at one facility, for a growing population that is spreading out, but The Princess Margaret Hospital is just too over crowded and too overtaxed. I have witness doctors and other care givers have to wade through sewerage from broken or overflowing pipes to render care to patients. The money for a brand new, state of the art hospital may never be available all at once, but if government was to identify a location with sufficient property, and start with say emergency services and commit to completing a full service hospital over a say 10 year period, utilizing each part of the facility as it is completed, then that's how the country will afford a new hospital.

UPDATED: Woman dies after being hit by truck
This makes me angry. This elderly lady should be alive, one second and she's gone.
On the other end these dumb butt uninformed drivers need to stop the practice of stopping any and everywhere to allow pedestrians to cross at dangerous spots. I know you think you're being kind and helpful but you're really placing the pedestrian and other drivers in danger. The driver in the next lane can't see that person in front of your car or bus, and they certainly can't read your mind.
The spokesman on the news admonished pedestrians to make sure the way is clear on dual carriage ways before crossing. WHAT!!!!!!!????? You're not supposed to be crossing the road anywhere you feel you can cross, yes I know people do it, who wants to walk a mile before they can cross, but you should not be encouraging people to "take a chance". We really need a massive education campaign on road use for pedestrians, motorcyclists, bicyclists, car drivers, everybody. Merging has turned into a competition of who can get there first and I een letting you in front of me, people still using the left lane in roundabouts to travel right, and red lights are a joke.
In addition RTD should study road use patterns, if persons are continually crossing at particular junctures then maybe something should be done to allow for them to cross safely. Like a traffic light that engages from user input, of course that would have to be balanced against interruption to traffic flow.
Sincere condolences to the family, RTD don't let this lady's passing be in vain.

Well at least we can say the driver remained on the scene. That's better than what's been happening lately. I was really getting tired of hearing people leave the scene of accidents, it's a really cold act and would only haunt them for the rest of their lives. I am happy this driver followed the law despite the tragic outcome. Condolences to the family.

Fixing Grand Bahama is easy:
-
Remove all VAT from Grand Bahama
-
Remove all Bah Govt property tax from land in the Freeport area
-
Remove all requirements for businesses in the Freeport area to need a Bah Govt business license and the associated inspections by Health, Works, etc.
-
Add the Rand Memorial Hospital and public clinics into the Public Health Authority system instead of having them like outside children under a separate "Grand Bahama" authority. This hinders the assingment of doctors, medicines, supplies, and blood tests from happening in a sane and timely manner.
-
Bahamasair to start paying landing fees like other airlines that utilize FPO.
-
Open the road in front of Princess Towers.
-
Invite the Big Red Boat (Disney) to return to Port Lucaya and put in jail any taxi driver who speaks or acts against it.
-
Dont sell anything else to or allow any further investment from any Chinese.
-
Remove the $50 tax from container trucks traveling on the "Queen's Highway"
-
Never again extend the Hawksbill Creek Agreement more than 15 years at a time.
Sit back and watch the money flow into the Treasury.

Good list, except for number 5. That money would go to the Port Authority and they need to pay for some of the things they did to G.B.
