And this is the problem...selective enforcement. Yes, the dock is an eyesore that needs to be cleaned up. Yes, the police officers did nothing wrong by enforcing the law, but as officers of the law they must be seen to be impartial and fair. When the courts ruled that web shops were illegal, no less than the Commissioner gave the signal ~we are going to conduct a raid on your businesses, and "implicitly" we will give you time to clear up any clear evidence of illegality. I like him personally but I cry shame on the Commissioner for this episode. Enforce the law and enforce it fairly so that justice is seen to be done and appears to be done.

Seriously, how crowded and over-run does the PM want Bimini to get?

And when's the last time any one heard the Prime Minister praise any business on the island other than Resorts World Bimini? He acts like a paid employee of that resort, while ignoring every other businesses accomplishments.

He is based at the Miami office. First found out about this when I saw some photos on Facebook that a friend had posted. Showed the 40th Bahamas independence church service there in Miami and she had posted a photo of herself with Mr. Treco. This was in early July before the info was released here in Nassau.

Ban the sale of a completely legal item because some people use it illegally? You'd have to ban cigarettes, pipes, and papers too. Why not ban lighters and matches while you're at it? You do realize there are plenty of ways to smoke/vaporize/ingest Marijuana/THC right? Even a child can figure out how to use a soda can or even a hollowed out apple to smoke out of. If they really wanted to solve the problem they would legalize the plant and end all the shady business, smuggling and crime associated with the import and distribution of a substance that factually causes waaaaayyyyyy less harm than the drug of choice in the Bahamas--- that would be Alcohol.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see how Marijuana has the potential for "destroying some young boy, some young girl" when nearly every other aspect of life in the Bahamas is much more efficient at holding people back and bringing them down.

In 5 years when Marijuana is legalized throughout the US and the failed war on drugs is finally ended, the Bahamas will be the last country in the area to take advantage of the mighty cannabis tourism/tax potential.

Have to disagree with you there Beachboy. You don't have to choose to be straight because it is the normal order of things, it is how we are made. Just like a baby doesn't have to choose to suck on its mother's breast.

Comrade ThisisOurs am I to sense you desire nothing more than to come out of the closet cause if you have to request time-out to think, if you've ever been chased down by a gay man, pretty damn sure most Tribune readers, even if with a sly smirk would say, that's you've be so chased and smacked on ya lips. Now, fess up ... cause their only question would be. How wet of a kiss was it?

I carry my "papers", why wouldn't I? Again ROTFLMAO @ Police State. And FYI, I drive all day and night and hardly ever see a single cop, yet see 99% of the people breaking the law. Hilarious jokes you got, bout police state HA HA HA.

If you are driving at .. what 7am when they are doing this? .. as I never see this (im just going to sleep at 7am lol) .. then sounds like a 9-5? Im not mad at YOU, but unfortunately those of us that dont work 9-5s and have to compete with foreign (for the most part illegal) workers for years now, 24 hours a day every single day, we have been punished all this time - it's about time immigration did "something", albeit not exactly the only solution. Sounds like if anything, perhaps they are doing it at the wrong time of day though, like the prison bus runs.

@ thinker - you must work a cozy 9-5 and dont have to worry about illegal foreign workers taking your jobs, and getting paid 10x your salary. And I guess you never had to call or email immigration about illegal workers ... who then tell you there is nothing they can do about it. I'm actually surprised they are doing their job now, after so many years of not doing it.

That's like saying its illegal for a Bank to ask for ID when you cash a cheque - it's your cash, right, you worked your ass off for it? Just carry your drivers license for now, simple. It's not like you don't know they are doing this, it is not being done in secret.

Good, now carry your papers next time. You want to work in this country doing what locals can do, yet enjoying a life a luxury locals do not get .. then deal with it. If you really love this country, then buy some property (if you haven't already) and become a permanent resident..

They are supposed to lock you up until they can prove you can legally be here before they let you go. You think they are just going to let him go and then go to the company to be faced with some 'run around'. Let the company come and get him if he is such a major asset or if its so serious that he is absent. He should be a responsible legal alien and carry his permit/ID's etc. Come on man, COMMON SENSE, Ine need no law to tell me that. Yall are the same types of Bahamians who say "Man ine carrying no ID, cuz the police dont ask for them" and then when the Police do ask, you are in a jam, because ya too lazy and irresponsible.

rory 10 years, 10 months ago on Govt says sorry to UBS executive

On the one hand you dummies complain about crime - which is a valid argument, but on the other hand you say that Immigration should not do their job. Forget opinions, and everything else, fact is the law mandates a foreign worker on a work permit carry that with them at all times. Law enforcement should never EVER show any preference to someone based on whatever business they are or claim to be employed with - otherwise you should have no issue with webshops, drug dealers, and the list goes on - all those "industries" employ thousands of Bahamians in one way or another. Basically you are saying the Bahamas is for sale (no argument there lol) and that this UBS bank has bought the Bahamas, and that without them the country is doomed?? Fact is most of those immigration officers probably never even heard of UBS or barely even know where East bay street is - not everyone in Nassau travels or lives on the north side of the Island. And you are forgetting the 9000 + skilled Bahamians that are leaving or never coming back because jobs are being handed over to foreign workers like it is candy, and the impact on tens of thousands of other jobs because of that. What about THOSE people, don't you want THEM in your country? Cause they are leaving, no question about it, they are tired of being screwed over from one government to the next, from one traitor to the next, they are tired of being considered a dumb stupid animal, a lesser human being, than a foreigner .. by their own people. Local skilled workers scrape by for years, many with more skill, experience, and professionalism than the clowns you import, and then when a multi million dollar contract comes in you give it to a foreign company - not a foreigner - a FOREIGN COMPANY. Fact is Bahamians with skills and brains cannot get ahead here, you give all their worthwhile jobs to foreign companies or foreign workers - foreign is better, let the 3rd world inbred animals just go sweep the floor right. Hope you like DIY .. best get started learning a trade, cause all the skilled workers will be gone soon, somewhere they are treated as equal and not as pieces of shit by their own people. Ever watch the movie Idiocracy? That's what its gonna be like here, soon enough.

I have lost hope for this country. @Tal @banker @BID You all are taking this tooo personal. Act right and get treated right. The job of the officers in general is not to harrass the public, yall are the same ones who dont want nobody tell yall nothing about anything especially officers who enforce the law. Yall are the lawless ones in the country because you and almost every Bahamian along with some Foreigners just do not respect authority. I agree with some of your posts on other articles but here and 150+ comments on the one prior, you all have lost the rationalization of this whole process. The immigration officers were doing their jobs. How easy it is for any criminal to claim 'bad treatment' especially when they always get a away with slackness and then finally get caught. I agree with @HonestMan in giving him 24 hours or so to produce, but too much bribery is going on. How embarrassing it is for the country that is already labeled 'for sale' since the 80's for an MP to come out and apologize for the way 1 person was treated (a foreigner at most). The UBS man was not responsible enough to keep his documents on him. If he was in the USA, they would have locked his a$$ up until they could prove otherwise. When yall go to the U.S its like everyone all of a sudden remembers to obey the law, but here, yall could care less about laws because for far to long lawlessness has been going on, and now that enforcement is finally enforced and is proving to be working much better than the past, yall now complain. Who cares if he is a big time business executive. You know how many forgeries, laundering and white collar crimes are being committed in this country by these same foreign business executives that all of a sudden yall cherish so much? But you wouldn't crack down on them because they are such an 'asset' to the country. What happened to the fair treatment of the 'nationals'. Maybe some of these foreigners who are used to getting away with lawless slackness need to resort to leaving the Bahamas when they crack down on them, maybe that way many more Bahamians would get a fair chance in Life in the Bahamas as it relates to business ownership, oppurtunity etc. For far too long the Foreigners seem to be worshipped here and take advantage of our lawless loopholes, and I blame the 2 governments FNM & PLP for letting this get out of hand. Money hungry politicians. When are they going to represent the people that elected them? When they go to office they forget about the people and try to develop and make things better for their own selfishness. There isnt anything wrong with what they did, a white man being held up in a majority black country is for some reason considered a 'crime' here yet they forget that this country is dominantly black.
