CuriousAbaconian 10 years, 3 months ago on Smith for COB president

When I was a student in 2004-5, Dr. Smith was indeed the recipient of a "no confidence" vote at Ramapo College in New Jersey. It was embarrassing then, and is so now. Less than two years later, he was forced to resign from COB due to accusations of plagiarism. One would think that an individual with his level of education would be familiar with plagiarism and its consequences (he's head of a college after all). Everyone knows - plagiarism is the Cardinal Sin of Academia! What a horrible example/message to send to our young people. How COB can ever discipline someone for plagiarism in the future is beyond me. Smith is a bad choice.

Comrades, on the College Of Bahamas's Seal are written the following words to remind all students and faculty, all about: KNOWLEDGE . TRUTH . INTEGRITY.

Don't even know why he was included in the four candidates. Should never have being nominated! The choice should have being between one of the three other worthy candidates. What message are you sending to other qualified candidates? And the message to students? I too would like to know 'who his people is' and why certain people seem to want him as president. Investigate TRIBUNE!

This is not just about the COB community or even The Bahamas ... we are seeking to move to university status and we live in a globalized environment where we cannot be seen as watering down the standards that are held internationally. Our education system will be a laughing stock for others if we go back to Smith.

No, he should not have even been considered for the job. There were three other qualified individuals without the 'baggage' he has. It makes the College look bad and everyone connected with it look bad too.

Sickened 10 years ago on COB AGREES THREE-YEAR DEAL WITH SMITH AS PRESIDENT

Well at least its only for three years. By that time hopefully we can get a sensible council in place at COB that can choose a respectable president.

I still want to know who the other candidates were as they must of been absolutely terrible if this joker got the nod.

B_I_D___ 10 years ago on Bahamian dies as US police shoot him with stun gun

@John and SP...what part of the rest of the story did you miss...when they opened his jail cell he busted free and into the public area and proceeded to assault officers and others by grabbing what he could basically and throwing it at them. I'd tazer the mo-fo as well!! I do agree in one respect though, clearly he was hopped up on some sort of drug and should have been kept under medical watch and supervision. Black white pink or purple nothing in this story would have changed given the 'story' as presented.

ThisIsOurs 10 years ago on TOUGH CALL: What's the hold up with a Bahamian university?

I admit I did not finish the article, but the thing that struck me was Ms Bethel's (who. I respect) definition of a University as a place where ideas are encouraged....that hit me hard. Is the dog wagging the tail again? Why would a name change from "College" to "University" suddenly lead to a new culture? This country is in a CRISIS. it's been so for the past three or four years, some might argue 40, years. How much COB research have we seen addressing the issues of the day? What is the College's current position on gambling and effects on social and economic fabric of the country? What does the College think about the idea of Carnival? What is the College's position on corruption/freedom of information? What is the College's position on mandatory minimum sentences? What does the College propose for a national crime plan? What does the College think about the increasing involvement of China in the development of the country? How does the College think our system of representation could be changed so it's more effective and less susceptible to corruption?

YOU DO NOT NEED A NEW TITLE TO BE ABLE TO THINK. And most certainly after you get a new title it won't give boldness, a sense of independence or ideas to anybody. Work on what you have NOW. When you're mature enough to dress up and go out on your own, everyone will know.

Greentea 9 years, 6 months ago on COB proposes 'ill timed' 50 per cent rise in tuition fees

COB cant run on fumes. It can't build from dust and Smithy can't make a dollar out of fifty cents. The government (both - by the way) has cut funding to COB, and among a host of things COB needs MONEY to grow and improve. And to Bahamians up and down spending money on online degrees- stop wasting your money. They are not worth the cost of the internet from cable bahamas. In this global system we are entering, they are not accredited, certified or valued and quite frankly I agree with that. College is more than just getting paper. Of you want - take a course on line, but when people look at you funny as you brag about your online, BA, MA or PhD- it is because it has little value. Many colleges and universities so gung ho on it these past years, are dialing back. I am not saying that you won't get a job- if someone likes you enough you are in- but don't think for a moment its because of your online MA-PhD and don't expect MA-PhD money. COB has many, many problems but it is still a deal- And yes I am a graduate.

When it comes down to tourist product, perception is reality. The only people that control this product is us, and we don't do it. Jim Walker was not born to beat up the Bahamas, Jim Walker would actually write very favorably about the Bahamas tourist product, if we gave him reason to. The sooner we get the idea of Bahamian exceptionalism out of our heads when it comes to the tourist product, the better it is for all of us. Its call work, one brick at a time.Clean up down town, have friendly staff, adjust the prices, provide service, put Nassau and the Bahamas on the list of destinations of each tourist to return to as soon as possible, for all the right reasons.

This is one of the possible results of selling the country to outsiders and I mean any nationality. Government after government has allowed and even encouraged the sale of islands, cays and tracts of land to anyone willing to pay a high enough price for it. When your own government has little to no confidence in its own people what do you expect from outsiders who see the way the wind is blowing?
