Sickened 5 years, 9 months ago on Bishops demand ‘war on guns’

Guns aren't the problem, our people are the problem. As you can see just yesterday, those people who don't have guns are going to use knives. Look at England. They must be the stabbing capital of the world.

Violent, unsocialized, psychopaths will use any item available to inflict as much harm as possible. Put Bahamians in a large enough group and we become nasty! Without a large enough police presence at any gathering, we as a people, will undoubtedly seriously injure or kill someone.

Picewell Forbes is a fine one to talk. He must think we've all forgotten about his great faux pas that contributed to John Travolta shutting down his secondary residence in Grand Bahama and leaving the Bahamas for good.

But Rolle too is clearly not the calibre of MP our legislative body should ever have....frankly, those in her constituency who voted for her should be scratching their heads.

Results expose failing schools

A DAY after Education Minister Jeff Lloyd said “something is wrong” with the country’s educational system, officials withheld an official subject letter grade breakdown for the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education examination results, which also show that of 6,692 students who sat the national tests this year, only 521 or 7.8 per cent, scored a C or above in mathematics, English and a science subject.

Education is the key to equality

IT was promising to see some average, everyday Bahamians gather at Rawson Square this week to demonstrate about matters concerning them. In last week’s column, I spoke about the need for us to break out of the mindset of sitting and waiting for a general election to take an active role in our democracy. To the extent that right-minded Bahamians are starting to get that message and go beyond just talk to action, I am encouraged.

Looking at Bahamian education

THIS past summer, scores of experts from around the country sat down in a hotel ballroom at great expense to figure out how to “transform” our failed education system. It was the first major re-evaluation of Bahamian schools since a national task force was set up in January, 1993.

enough 4 years, 9 months ago on UPDATED: Coronavirus – 61-year-old is first case

Correct Well Mudda. Of course you will have 0 cases if you are not testing. This is akin to if I was a student and claim I am a straight 'A' student. If not one is assessing or testing me then no one can dispute that I am an 'A' student.

Testing is key to managing this crisis.

ThisIsOurs 4 years, 9 months ago on Prime Minister’s speech on COVID-19 in full

it sounded good but was oddly odd as per unusual.

What about telephone/internet access/light? Will a free quota be given to each customer for the shutdown period?

Why ask the opposition leader to give him suggestions? Why not invite the leader, deputy leader and two others from the opposition into the discussion? I mean if it's to be bipartisan?

Does all schools cover govt and private schools? What are parents to do with children at home unattended? For private schools, if schools are closed for a month are workers to be paid? The school wont be receiving any income.

What about the message to churches? They had a big convention last night with the pastor proclaiming that "the devil had tried to stop the service"

What are family island residents to do? They will be facing unique challenges. Distance, no hospital and logistics of supplies. They were my main concern when I spoke about knowledge of natural remedies. Their population also tends to be older.

What about bill paying in general? What about hotel workers and taxi drivers and restaurant workers who depend on tourist dollars? What about "everybody", tourism has foolishly been allowed to undergurd everything.

It was a lot of for the camera I'm a doctor and I'm in charge posturing. On the other hand they couldn't announce the first case without a message from the PM. That might explain why he had nothing to say. Required to speak but not having planned.

On Wednesday the ministry of finance will address us? seriously? After China and Italy and Iran hes not ready yet? Exactly what did "planning" entail up to this day? Is Jeff Lloyd still on the economics advisory council? With all the financial professions we have in this country? (that was a shocker) You cant make this up. We need to stop it with unqualified persons posturing in these key positions. We can see today that lack of knowledge will literally kill us. Stop it with the political appointments.

The speech was a lot of nothing. Stuff everyone already knows.

BahamaPundit 4 years, 9 months ago on 'Not enough respirators for a severe outbreak'

It's time for us to make good on our friendship with China and have them send test kits and respirators right away. The Bahamas has been playing games. It needs to wake up. Just look at Italy. Without rapid testing as in South Korea (TTT Trace, Test, Treat) and a surplus of respirators, things turn sideways quick with this virus. The strategy should be to test 500 Bahamians a day and isolate them. China is sending test kits and respirators to the Philippines, and the Bahamas should ask to join the queue. We've already lost serious ground. No time to play cute with privacy. The names of infected people should be released to the public, so their contacts can be traced and quarantined. The Government may be covering up that its 14 day quarantine of Bahamians returning from China failed and let the virus in (faulty test kits & virus can stay dormant and untraceable for 24 days). There is no room or time for a cover up. Complete transparency is required.

sheeprunner12 4 years, 8 months ago on PM suggests more restrictions on movement could come

This Covid19 dilemma is a Catch22 problem for any country ……… If we have a 24 hour lockdown/curfew and close 90% of businesses without the requisite social services support to assist the 60% of our financially vulnerable population, we will face a national economic collapse …….. and if we leave everything open, then we may face a potential health crisis that our public and private health services and medical supplies reserves cannot handle.

How do we balance this between economic collapse vs health crisis????? ….. Do we risk everyone getting infected and testing for the true infection rate and still allow for economic activity and jobs once they practice responsible public protocols??? Are we socially disciplined enough for that???

hj 4 years, 8 months ago on WE ALL NEED TO DO MORE: Curfew extended until at least April 8, two infected cases hospitalised, designated shopper for each house

The problem is that many Bahamians now go to the food store because they want an excuse to go out. Not only this creates unnecessary long lines but creates more health risks that will cause the curfew to extend even more. It looks that the new daily routine is to go out with your kids buy them junk food and then hang out with them in the food store for as long as you can. We have so many fools in this country it is not funny anymore

John 4 years, 8 months ago on Lloyd urges online learning as schools set to stay closed

Most schools and colleges in the US have terminated this term and allowing students to be graded based on their performance up until the time classes were cancelled or including any online work they completed. For sure schools cannot be opened before the end of April.

OriginalBey 4 years, 8 months ago on Lloyd urges online learning as schools set to stay closed

This is of little benefit as it is not tied directly to the curriculum and teachers are not facilitating classes. If these students could learn independently the national average wouldn't be D-

Why the sudden surge in numbers? Is it possibly this is related to the employee at Wendy’s who served hundreds of customers at their drive-thru window? I’m sure they have the store’s tapes hence the prediction.
