kkphilli4 11 years, 4 months ago on Cuban nationals repatriated to Havana

Leader of the Cuban Democracy Movement Ramon Sanchez, is a convicted felon that served 4 years in prison in The United States.

He has been disrupting things in the U.S. for years. He has blocked traffic in New York's Lincoln tunnel preventing drivers from traveling to and from New York City from New Jersey. He also in the past has sat on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami blocking drivers from going to Miami Beach from the mainland. We need to remind Americans what he has done to its citizens while protesting the U.S. repatriation of those Cubans that nearly made it to their shores.

Why has The Bahamas not hired an excellent P.R. Firm in the U.S. is beyond me. Why after all the lip service there still has not been any lawsuit in the tens of millions of dollars filed in a U.S. court for defamation is beyond me. Ignoring the bogus claims of the fake video clearly is not winning strategy. We need to act IMMEDIATELY to defend the good name of our country. This is poor leadership on the part of the government.

In the future, to avoid these allegations by Cuban Americans every few years, we need to make it a policy to have all Cubans deported back to Cuba within 48 hours. The longer you hold these unruly people the more damage is done to our reputation internationally. Surely Fred Mitchell can sign an agreement with the Cuban Government to accept their people back immediately rather than the Cuban government dragging their feet.

Far as I am concerend every single jitney driver in Nassau should lose their license. And our police really need to get real. How most of the jitney drivers still have a drivers license is beyond me. Time to institute a point system for jitney and cab drivers, every traffic offense should result in points being applied to the driver's license. Once you get a number of points you automatically lose your license. No need for a judge to make a decision, make it an automatic process.

Jitney's are the greatest threat to public safety on a daily basis it is time to get them folks in line, if they choose to conitue to drive like raving lunatics then they lose their job. Simple as that. The way they drive tells me they have no intelligence or respect for anyone or anything. How can anyone have a conversation with these thugs? Put meausres in place, no talking, act now. Make them know that we the general public hate them with a passion for how they act everyday. Make them know we have ZERO respect for them. Get those thugs in line now!!!

Talk is cheap. They agreed to many things the last time and in the end it became politics as usual. I say revoke them all and make it a true bus service. Streamline the service with proper bus colours and some sense of uniformity. Implement proper schedules and routes and lets have sensible bus stops and stations. Which modern city you know has a bus system where every bus colour is different, the driver stops where he sees fit (including at the gas pumps with passengers on board), and we the passengers and fellow commuters have the displeasure of hearing the drivers favourite playlist?

The focus should be on other more important things in this country. Two overly rich men , who seem to have getting on each others nerves as their common pass time, has now decided to engage Bahamian puppets to do the mud slinging and crowbar swinging for them. I am not buying Fred Smith's story or even half of it. If he knew Koed Smith's people were on the beach working he went out there looking for trouble and /or something to make headlines. Don't trust either of these men or the goons who have them employed....They have the same last name: smith vs smith aka spy vs spy they may even be family!

Not every discussion has to be about race or nationality CC. The fact is the gaming laws are in fact discriminatory to Bahamians. It isn't racist or xenophobic to state the facts and it appears that's what Bastian is saying here. Now you may disagree with him or even the idea of gaming in this country but it is unfair to call every argument in support of putting Bahamians first, xenophobic or racist. We agree on a lot of things CC, but you allow your politics to constantly be on the attack of the PLP or anyone appearing to be in their support. Fact, gaming in the 'Bahamas' should be in large part owned and operated by Bahamians. Just as gaming in the United States is largely owned by Americans. There's no xenophobia there. Sure there should be and we welcome foreign investment. But foreign investment should not be to the detriment of the Bahamian business owner.

So true. The government is not serious about collecting revenue. There is no ease of doing business in the country. Not sure why these people are paid when nothing gets done. It truly is a restriction to commerce.

vinceP 11 years, 7 months ago on Minnis issues warning after US man killed

Once again Doc Minnis has missed the boat. As usual, he is consumed with just playing politics, just as the PLP did when the FNM was in power. What he is missing is that Mr. Bruner was killed while trying to stop a robbery. This is truly unfortunate, but lets not lose sight of the fact that many Bahamians are getting robbed, and murdered as well. Both the Government and the opposition need to spend less time playing the political game, and make a concerted effort in creating jobs fast! One of the top 10 reasons for crime is poverty, and until this is addressed, we can expect to see the crime levels increase. I wonder what will happen when if in fact the Government gets the number houses to shut down. That will mean additional people will be added to already high unemployment rate, and not to mention the many, many Bahamians that play numbers to supplement their incomes, or those that are already unemployed and simply have no other means but to gamble.

@Thisisours. This why we really need to start pushing for more oversight in our Parliament. We all know that successive governments have pillaged and raided the resources of this country. That's why I say we need to make some amendments to the constitution for an autonomous agency to monitor the transactions of our governments. We always have this back and forth blame game when a new government comes in. We also need to restrict the powers of the PM from unilaterally making appointments for some key positions. Perhaps we need to even go further in making sure that the PM cannot take on the role as Finance Minister. And, whoever does become Finance Minister is properly vetted and there is continuous Parliamentary oversight.

Pot meet Kettle. It really is legitimate to put questions to Grant Thorton. Think about it, they are the professionals, the experts who have compiled a report to show how company policies were circumvented...but they must have known that they themselves circumvented policy when they did not bid for this contract....it's simply amazing...I am apolitical. But the number of blow ups in less then 1yr is there for anyone to see...I would love it if Prime Minister Christie flew back from NY, rolled up his sleeves and whipped his administration into shape...use a carrot or a stick I don't care as long it's legal...but they have to start operating within the law, as one team, for the good of all Bahamians

Exactly spoiter. Its amazing to see how people are letting silly politics in the way of the big picture. I say they all did some wrong in this and should be reprimanded appropriately. But its like Cargill wants to attack anyone who questions what went on at NIB. I would agree that this is an exorbitant amount for an audit. But, if it had been done in-house I think the legitimacy and independence would have been jeopardized. What's weird though is the Tribune not perusing the audit and reporting on those findings. Instead, they choose to go after the government on its cost. The point is, yes the government should be questioned on the cost. But equally important is what was found in the report. If this isn't biased reporting I don't know what is.

What's even sillier is that people appear to be attacking Grant Thornton and its management. I don't see why its necessary to keep calling these people's names as if they even actively dealt with the report. Yes, they may be in management positions, but it doesn't mean that they personally compiled the reports. We are too personal man. Grant Thornton, like PwC, Ernst&Young, Deloitte&Touche is a reputable accounting firm. I think they all do a fine job of auditing and accounting. So please lets try to give people some credit and stop calling everyone political cronnies. These guys may not even bother with politics or care about either major political party.

Let's move on. It makes no sense being in a war of words with people who want to bully you. Bullies will always be bullies. There is no changing that. The deal is done. Curtains please. But again I plead with our government to get serious on this immigration stuff. Please can we really build a serious Naval force that will deter people who want to run rampant in our borders? It seems like these NGO's are out to get us from every angle. When it aint the economic rating firms its the OECD. When it aint them its the human rights people. I agree that we are not a perfect country but we are far better in terms of freedoms and rights than many other countries. This includes countries that the US has cozy relations with. Like I said before, no weapon formed shall prosper ........... Love my 242.

What's funny is that the many Cubans who we have welcomed into the Bahamas have yet to defend the name of this country. Where are your voices in all this? That's why it is really important to be sure of who we allow into this country. I am open to people from anywhere in the world coming and enjoying this place we call home. But I have to say we need to have more loyalty and respect from those who come to live with us.

FNMs and PLP are all full of crap. Both sides know full well that they receive contributions from certain individuals in our community. The fact of the matter is, we need campaign finance rules in the country. These foreigners always seem to want to ensnare Bahamian politicians and like the guppies they are they simply fall for it every time. I've always said that our politicians need to stare clear of these folks. This is seriously taking too much time away from important issues. All this over a man who is not even Bahamian and can pick up and leave any day he wishes. So why bother ourselves with his crap.

Couldn't agree more Ayatollah. We get pushed around too much as country. What makes it worse is it is often not the official governments of these countries but some disgruntled NGOs who always seem to have a bone to pick with the Bahamas. So what we should simply let them float through our waters and sail into our ports as it pleases them? Its funny that these folks talk about rights. You don't have the right to break our laws. Adding insult to injury whoever is behind the internet antics have the audacity to produce fake images and video of the Detention Centre. All in an effort to embarrass the country. I say we should not even blink an eye at them. Its one thing to make claims and have credible proof. But to concoct a story to try an somehow blackmail and embarrass the country is unacceptable. Politics aside we Bahamians need to stand together on this. I have no issue with Cubans or Haitians but the people representing these illegal immigrants always seem to want to fight dirty. You never hear them say thank you for rescuing us from a dingy that may capsize at any moment. Or thank you for feeding us. Its always this 'take them for suckers attitude.'

Stapedius 11 years, 4 months ago on Minnis seeks stem cell committee

Besides what people believe in terms of the ethics and regulation I am more concerned that this nonsense is taking so much time. Many have no issue with Minnis opposing the bill and doing his job as Opposition Leader. I think people are just keenly aware that we have some serious issues to deal with in this country that are not being addressed by either the government or opposition. So, yes voice your concerns about stem cell, but we honestly have so much more to focus on in this country. Our politicians really need to have a priority list with the goals and objectives of this nation. I can really care less about this bill. We have poor hospital services, the out island clinics are not getting the support they need. Nurses are not receiving the training nor the compensation to make meaningful contributions to our health system. These are real issues that we face day in and day out.

So while it is true that he has the right and responsibility to oppose it is also true that he needs to focus on challenging the government on some serious issues. Stem Cell research is not a critical issue facing this country. Crime is, education is, healthcare is, National Insurance/Pensions is, Immigration is, Social Services is and the list goes on.

Oh boy. We play the game of politics at such a clumsy stupid level in this country. Everything has to be over dramatic. Both sides do it and we continue to call them honourable. What a pathetic bunch we have in our Parliament. Everyone wants some great historic moment of being scruffed out of the chambers because they believe they're being silenced. We really need to graduate to a much higher thought process in this country. It seems all too easy and nowadays more common for people to throw a tantrum in the house. Again, Mrs. Butler-Turner, at the centre of it all. A large and in charge attitude. When will the FNM realize that Minnis is not the one. He simply doesn't have the salts. I would consider supporting them if they got their act together. Sorry, I'm from the generation they once called X. But I will say to these political leaders that is what we should call your generation. Not much has happened in this country in 25+ years. Marginal development and a declining education standard. We need to do better.
