The Bahamas is already thought of as an overpriced, overexposed, rude destination. This is going to be the nail in the coffin. I will not tell anyone to ever visit Nassau/ P.I. and the Family island are getting worse and worse. There is no value for money, hardly anything to do, the people are rude and trying to rip you off, and there is usually garbage everywhere you look. That's where I want to spend my hard earned money!

Concerned citizen, one can only assume that your suggestion is so reasonable, it is over the head of current government, or more likely it would disturb to many corrupt relationships.

How can any rational person suggest that more public capital should be thrown down the sink hole of BEC????
1. We have power rates that are obscene. 2. We use positively the dirtiest form of energy production known in the civilized world. 3. And, BEC loses millions every year.

Get politics out of the power business. That is our only hope! We should start with letting bidding contracts for this new generation facility to private concerns at an agreed supply cost to BEC,against the winning contractor's right to "take over" - not purchase just take over - BEC at anytime in the next ten years when they will contract to deliver power, at necessary levels, at a fixed rate, which should be pegged off rates in the U.S. The rate might have to be 115% or 120% of U.S. rates but not 300% which is what we pay now for totally unreliable service! Who but a corrupt politician can argue?

I don't suppose the government has considered royalties from any successful oil/gas exploration? or do they intend to rely on the country paying 20% vat!

If Perry Christie, Minister Of Finance, did not realize the implications of all of this illegal money flowing through the system, he should resign immediately. This is our future we're talking about, in the hands of a man who tells us on numerous occasions that he knows nothing.

Another disgraceful display of power wielded to hurt and destroy, rather than build, encourage or develop. The Leadership, so called organizations of professionals, cartels and cliques drive away countless talented Bahamians all in the name of self preservation. Is it really any wonder the country is in the state it is in?

Papa is no answer Voltaire,he is in part responsible for this mess and yes Mr. Miller, the state of our country is the worst we have ever seen. It is the price we pay for electing Village idiots with a bent for pilfering. It is the price we pay for stifling independent thought, it is the price we pay for political malfeasance. What we need is enablers that say yes to Bahamians who have ideas, and want to pursue their dreams with their own money, be it installing Alternate energy equipment for their homes and or businesses, or who can enlarge a competitive atmosphere in any sector of the economy. We need yes men through the rank and file of the Civil service, retrained to understand their obligation to serve the people, and not be obstacles at every turn, scared only for their own jobs. We need a return to the rule of law and accountability in both public and private sectors. Unfortunately we are all busy protecting whatever we have, no matter how large or small, no matter lawfully gained or stolen. Perhaps once we have lost it all we shall wake up...........

The_Oracle 10 years, 2 months ago on Pre-existing contract confusion sparks VAT 'inclusive price' call

VAT should be shown as a line item on the pricing of any good or service including Gasoline. However, if shown, Government will not be able to blame the private sector goods and services suppliers for prices rising, which they will. The private sector should show VAT on stickers etc anyway, it will be their only defense, and only tool for education. Transparency vs. the pervasive public ignorance on duty being included in pricing. Hidden taxation is the enemy of all in the Bahamas. What isn't hidden is avoided. As for undermining contract law, let the dogs of war fly( lawsuits ).

The Bahamas 'expects its fair share' of the money...shock and awe there!! SHOW ME THE MONEY!! But while I talk out da side of ma mouth, the other side is allowing dredging to destroy our reefs, oil spills to go unabated from our power plants and new power stations (in Abaco) to be built that utilize one of the worst and cheapest and nastiest fuels remaining on this planet that is being outlawed in most countries. Oh yes, we are leading the way with our goal towards climate change...by DESTROYING it as fast as we can with the tools we have, before the bigger global impact starts taking effect to drown away our sorrows.

VAT is not the answer to our problems. We need to collect the outstanding taxes, close the loopholes in the existing tax system and cut back on wasteful government spending, kickbacks and crony contracts. But for that to happen we need a trustworthy government......... sigh
