John 9 years, 11 months ago on $8m project’s closure would be ‘felt throughout tourism’

OIL PRICES ARE EXPECTED TO DROP to $50 a barrel (some say $40) by mid 2015. This will lead to the biggest cost of living drop in the free world in 20 years. Consumers will have more disposable income, airline ticket prices will fall and tourism will boom. But will the Bahamas be in a position to benefit? Even with the reality of Cuba opening up and becoming a preferred destination for many American travellers. The biggest problems in the Bahamas is government inefficiencies and corruption that contributes directly to the extremely high cost of living. Then there is the high cost of electricity. Even with VAT the Bahamian consumer will see a 15 -20% drop in cost of living as world prices on consumer goods will fall. However the main component that will determine sustainability of the lower cost of living will be the government's ability to get its act together. It must control spending. It must pay down the national debt and it must get MORE value for money. Crime must be curbed. Failing this the Bahamas will price itself out the tourist market. Despite travellers having more money to spend, they will seek out destinations where they get value for money and feel safe. The Bahamas will be left sucking on grapes. SOUR ONES!

DonAnthony 9 years, 9 months ago on BAMSI workers not paid, claims Minnis

I am the poster child of a Bahamian who benefited from Cable. At the time of cable's IPO twenty years ago I was 25 and I poured all my savings into buying cable at $1 per share. During that time cable has returned an annualized rate of 14.2% per year for 20 years! And that is not including dividends. Because of cable and other wise investments on Bisx I was able to retire 3 years ago at the age of 43! Ingraham pledged to offer 9% of BTC shares to the public and when he came to power Mr. Christie blocked it. Now he is refusing small Bahamian investors to buy into the new cellular company. It is being reserved for large investors only. And he has the nerve to say he cares about Bahamians. The truth is he does not give a damn about us, if he did he would do what Ingraham did with cable, and the port, and what he planned to do with BTC,let the little man get his shares and get his part of the economic pie. So birdie ask your P.M why he does not believe in Bahamians or at least the little man and only believes in his cronies and favored few!

The PLP said THEY had the answer to crime and plastered New Providence with their ridiculous posters. The only vision the PLP has is a vision of enriching its inner circle of friends and cronies - there is no vision for the country. How can any sane person fail to find fault with this totally incompetent administration? The farce that is BAMSI is just one example of how incapable this government is.

Fact: The majority of people who vote for the PLP are: 1) incapable of reading, let alone understanding, this article; 2) cannot afford to have internet access, and 3) are too ignorant to care about the issue of corruption.

bahama1 9 years, 7 months ago on Old Fort Bay murder victim’s wife to face court

I don't think the colour of her skin will be an issue seeing as the majority of people in the Bahamas charged with murder are out walking the streets anyway. So if she does get off easy it will be just like any other individual charged in this country. The issue is the judicial system of the Bahamas not the colour of her skin.

Throwing a party to make people feel good is how you distract them from the corruption and sh*tty lives that they have. The Romans did it by building the Colosseum and having gladiator games. The PLP do it by having relay races and Carnival. Forget the fact that they added $1.2 billion to the debt in a year and a half. Forget the fact that Jerome Fitzgerald is connected to Rubis. Forget that Gray interfered in the judicial system. Forget that this is the same old corrupt PLP that ran drugs and sold the country out. Rejoice. Eat, drink, dance and be merry!

The younger generation need to step forward, break ranks, possibly even form a new party. That party must be a serious party. It cannot take the DNA approach of trying to win the whole election by fielding a lot of jokey candidates. It should field 7 - 10 serious candidates that can win their seats and decide the government - neither the FNM nor PLP can win a majority in the next election if there is a serious third party. Bran should probably join that party and be the deputy leader and let Loretta leave the FNM and join that party too as leader. Bring in Rollins and a few of the other young PLPs and FNMs in. The young people of this nation would vote for them in droves if they promised the platform that follows. Transparency, accountability, freedom of information, fiscal responsibility and serious and focused issues based leadership should be that new party's mantra. No taxation without representation and no representation without taxation - as in, everyone pay their bills and their taxes. No favours. That third party will then decide the government and can negotiate for influence using that position of strength. It is time for the country to grow up and wake up. It is time for the full public tendering of contracts via a government contracting website. It is time for full disclosure of MPs assets. It is time for renewable energy. It is time for people first, not government/party and their cronies first. We need a whole new Majority Rule movement in our country with creative and innovative thinkers and leaders - no dinosaur thinkers anymore. The PLP have become the very thing they claimed to be against. They are now simply the black UBP. There is no difference between the modern day PLP and the Bay Street Boys of old. They do the same nonsense now. Skin colour is irrelevant - character, integrity and merit need to be everything in the modern Bahamas. The PLP is a patron-client dinosaur party that has long outlived its usefulness. There is nothing Progressive or Liberal about the PLP. All they are is a Party!

Perry Christie, I DO NOT WANT YOU INVOLVED IN ANYTHING REGARDING MY HEALTH! My God, man. Don't you know when to stop? Where, just WHERE do you expect this money to come from? I can't even treat myself after a rough week anymore. People are just about stuck on the island since we can't even afford the cost of travel to get off it. Stop borrowing, stop spending so much in general and on foolishness in particular and rid your cabinet of the people you know are killing this country! If you want to do something good for health care how about this. Why don't you instead take away all the taxes on healthy foods so we can afford it, stay healthy and avoid all these bad diagnoses, medications and numerous doctor and hospital visits. REMOVE VAT from health care PERIOD, I mean, does anywhere ELSE in the world tax health care? and even more importantly, just remove yourself. Please, successful and legitimate business persons in this country, can you just offer yourself for election this next lap? Country above self? These lawyers have utterly wrecked this place and we badly need to turn things around. To say we are in trouble is a gross understatement.

John 9 years, 6 months ago on Wilson: Ingraham responsible for Sth. Eleuthera’s ‘demise’

This man has to be the most chronic and fanatical liar in the history of Bahamaian politics. Everyone knows the demise of not only South Eleuthera, but the entire island of Eleuthera came under the PLP government under the leadership of L O Pindling. They bought out the Hatchet Bay farms that used to supply the entire country with milk, eggs and icecream and closed it down. and they forced many of the investors and second home owners on Eleuthera,South Eleuthera especially,to leave the country. Those were the days when Pindling and the PLP would plant lamp poles and run miles and miles of electrical wire promising the people electricity. Then when they didn't get the votes they would refuse to connect the supply. They did the same thing with water pipes and telephone lines. This was done not just in Eleuthera but a number of Family Islands It was Hubert Ingraham who eventually electrified the family islands. Pindling use to send heavy equipment to some islands making the people believe the roads were going to be fixed just before elections. But as soon as the votes were in the equipment would be packed up and brought back to Nassau. Franky Wilson cannot rewrite history with his lies. Everyone in South Eleuthera knows about Pindling and the PLP curse on that island. Eleuthera people teach their children history. Even when Perry Christie was prime minister the last time he did nothing for South Eleuthera. And Franky Wilson knows that his welcome to that island is not a warm ones do his shameless lies does not make him any more welcome.

I think we have a failed leadership, not a political party problem. Both parties must change or be erased off the political map - and this time for good.
My Dear Comrade AsISeeIt, let The Tribune poll its readers and overwhelmingly it will show that a majority of Bahamalander's – for the first time in the country's long history - believe there's and their loved-ones safety and security will be less safe after 2017, regardless of electing either of the two "present or past leadership mentality" PLP or FNM governments. Truth is, neither party's leadership scores high marks with voters.
I consider the DNA to be as FNM as the FNM, so don't even mention them, if outside that equation.
And, tell Papa Hubert to please stay retired, okay?

Here's how it works and the reason they use a foreign company. PLP spokesman contacts said company in Canada and says need to do promotional work and agrees on fee of 1 million 800 thousand dollars. Then, PLP spokesman informs Canadian company that shell company X must be paid a finder's fee of 2 million dollars for locating them or the deal is off. Canadian company agrees and invoices Bahamas Government 3 million 8 hundred thousand dollars. 2 million dollars is paid into shell company X and divided between select cabinet ministers.
