From the desk of a certain minister: "MY FELLOW BAHAMIANS, as we are about to celebrate our 40th anniversary of this country, several hundred Bahamians/haitians/residents or persons without stauts will be kicked out into the streets and unto homelessness. So if you hear the loud noises,it may not be all fireworks for the Indepencence celebrations, but those landlords and the occupants in the shanty towns fisting it out. This government won't be involved because we don't roll like that. We put pressure on the landlords and force them to kick these people out into the streets. Don't you feel sorry for them, go on and enjoy the 40th as usual, because we have social services lined up to offer assistance (around this same time next yea,r when we celebrating our 41 st., and also the department of immigration. For those who are here illegally and cannot find no where to stay go to the immigration department and thet will see that you get back home at no cost to you but at the expense of the Bahamian people. You see we don't tolerate shanty towns in this country, not even for impoverished, fallen on hard times, indigineous Bahamians.. we rather have you homeless...Happy Independence Bahamas!

We love to cover our dirty linen , and call it chair covering . When we were a nation for sale and drugs and the moneys accompanying it was the order of the day , men of the cloth shouted that principles dont put bread on our tables .We to love to hide the bad , call it for what it is . it seems as thou morality and nationalistic attitudes only come about when certain parties govern us . Were was our national fervor when the posters of the murder count was placed on major thoroughfares throughout the island ? In fact the now DPM called it suppressing the truth , are we now about suppressing the truth ? The minster told a brave bold face lie stating that no cubans were abused at the center . He needs to resign. He could have said from the minute the reports came out, that we dont condone such actions and if such a thing did occur we will prosecute those involved. That would have been the end of that .

But it's not about bad mouthing the Bahamas...Fred Mitchell is doing us a huge disservice trying to whip up Cuban hatred. I pray God those photos were doctored because I cannot imagine the pain that man endured if they are real..I cannot imagine the pent up anger it would have taken to beat another human being so badly. It's not about bad mouthing the Bahamas, it's exactly the opposite, using Alfred Grey's words, it's about saying to the world "this is not the way we do things", this is an aberration, they are a few men who went completely against their training and here are the steps we are taking to ensure something like this never happens again. It's about saving our name.

The cover up is always worse than the crime. This is what happens when politicians show in-difference to being up front, frank and honest. it will eventually come back to bite you in the ass.

TAL...going to ask you a very specific question. Let's go under the assumption that the abuse IS FACT...what are your personal views on such abuses? Any abuse, does not have to be this particular story. No politics, just the topic of abuse. What's your opinion on it. Do you find it acceptable?

As I thought, totally incapable of answering one specific question, without rambling on about FNM and HAI. That was not part of my question...deflect, deflect and deflect and blame everyone else except those in the here and now.

This is disgusting and disheartening. What kind of sociopathic, easily bribed officers do we have working to defend us?
Aside from the abuse, the government as a whole is one big let down in terms of the way this entire situation was handled. This is institutional failure. It's not one Minister or one Ministry involved in this. If the Prime Minister has any sense of morality and credibility he would immediately dismiss not just one, but a few of his colleagues.
I'm ashamed.

When this whole incident started, I had no intention to comment as this was a whole sad state of affairs. However, whether you are PLP or FNM you should not condone the ill treatment of detainees in the Bahamas. The government from the start of this ordeal treated it with total missteps. Instead of attacking everyone that dared to contradict their authority, should have simply stated what they knew to be the whole truth and as Minister Mitchell said let the chips fall where they may. But in a truely brutish fashion, the foreign minister tried to silence every critic, even claiming Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition of siding the enemies of the Bahamas. To this day I still can't fully understand who these enemies are, as we have worked in amnesty with the USA, Cuba and Cubian Americans.

@TalRussell, the Nassau Guardian is carrying the very same story on its front page with even more sordid details, so its not just the Tribune. Always remember that, "truth crushed earth will always rise again". It appears that you and this government seem not to understand crisis management 101, which states that you should never stake out an initial position that is incompatible with your ability to build a golden bridge of compromise to new contradictory information. What is our move now? Do we double down further as the ship continues to sink? Where are the adults in our government. If we thought that this issue was just going to go away we are wrong. The PM needs to stand up and pivot this issue to contain the fall-out already inflicted and re-position us to move forward and restore some credibility. It is obvious that Fred Mitchell lacks the credibility to do so.

This is what happens when you enter shark invested waters without the necessary gear. How can an entity be equity holder ,creditor and customer? I am no financial wizard, by far, but why would you put your company in such a position? Greed is a serious thing. I guess those large upfront fees and commissions overshadowed the jeopardy involved. 735 investors wowwww could this be the "Bernie Madoff" case of the Bahamas?
