Arob 12 years, 4 months ago on RYAN PINDER ACCUSES INGRAHAM OF ‘MANIPULATING’ THE SYSTEM

Let’s put political affiliation aside at take an objective look at Minister Pinder’s response.

“In my situation,” he said, “when I nominated for the Elizabeth by-election there was no question to my residency or if I was qualified to run. I was a resident for clearly over a year and they tried to make a big issue over my qualifications….” Who had your loyalty? U. S. or The Bahamas? Is representing one country while holding the citizenship of another country “respect for the [Bahamian] electoral system”? You gave up your U. S. citizenship after pressure from the Bahamian public and your political opponents.

“… the difference between the PLP and the FNM is the PLP believe in transparency” Sorry Minister Pinder, the PLP’s culture is not about transparency. Although you say that you (PLP) believe in transparency, we, the people of The Bahamas, we do not see your structures and your processes as transparent. When questioned about why certain decisions were made or where is the government’s policy on certain issues, we hear ‘defensive’ sometimes ‘condescending’, sometimes ‘insulting’, more often ‘vague’ press responses justifying your actions.

“Mr Pinder …PLP … would not do anything to manipulate the system to gain an advantage…” Really Minister!

Ironvelvet 11 years, 10 months ago on Christie dismisses 'Jackass' claim

No one is making this political besides you Mr. Christie. If the FNM had said they supported gambling I suppose we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. It is OBVIOUS to even the slowest of the slow that you are pushing for a yes vote and it is APPEARING to those that use that lump three feet above their bottoms that you are "condoning illegality." Be a leader and say what you support. Stop being a coward and leaving what happens to the Bahamian public by saying, "well that's what YA'LL voted for." (don't blame me attitude) STOP BEING A PUNK!

By the way your dubious means of campaigning ("visiting each and every island") feigned by your objective of "making sure the government has no horse is the race" is seen for what it is too, a campaign for the yes vote.

Mr. Christie if you were appropriately displaying your feelings of being neutral you would have closed the shops in accordance with the current law on the books. If you were smart you should have closed the shops and give the addictive gamblers something to campaign for in a yes vote, as their withdrawal would probably make them pretty convincing campaigners. I assure you if Hubiggety was proposing to do this vote as you propose he would have closed the shops no matter who didn't like it, no matter the expense.

I STRONGLY ADVOCATE THE NO VOTE! Not for the proposed reasons of the FNM that the wording is not specific, but for gambling's current and likely amplified effect on society once it is legalized. Have you ever not eaten because your parents gambled away the money? Have you ever been evicted because your parents gambled away the money? Have you ever not been able to attend school because your school fee was in the pocket of the numbers man? We as Bahamians are a small country with few socioeconomic resources to help those who fall. I think it is ridiculous to compare our nation to the poor state of affairs in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and the like of other poor countries that allow gambling. Good for them, this is the Bahamas and we have to pay attention to Bahamian issues and their futuristic effects on OUR society.

TalRussell 11 years, 9 months ago on Gov't targets 15% VAT from July 1, 2014

Comrades the PM has come up with a new and what they think may be an ingenious tool for the government to raise additional tax revenues. And, then they can take the peoples money go on like a drunkard sailor's spending spree of ill thought out and ill timed projects. Throw-in creating one whole bunch of new cushy accounting and management political-tainted government departments, staffed with100% subsidized workers benefits jobs, and social programs and you get the picture where they are really headed with this VAT thing.

Take a closer look at the bleak economic problems taking place all over Europe and it should be sufficient to scare the hell out buying into anything that resembles or smells like a government Value-Added-Tax (VAT).

The PM wants you to believe that the VAT which he wants added to most anything from getting a haircut, paying your phone bills, right down to the cost of funeral expenses is not going to be more of a tax burden on the average Bahamian than the rich? Funny he should say this, when it could end up with tax payers aggregate tax burdens going-up a whopping 40%?

Comrades for damn sure it will create a much larger government with protected benefits and paychecks for the hiring of 100's new workers they will be rushing out to hire.

Instead of creating more government jobs, Bahamaland's inefficient government needs to be sending home about half of today's redundant workers, not be wanting to rush out to hire thousands more.

Every time a government paycheck is created over a private sector paycheck, it diminishes any incentive for comparable productivity. I am not some economist but any man or woman on the street can tell you that no government department is the place you would want to go to if you wanted to learn anything about workers efficiency on the job, economics or how free enterprise is suppose to work?

PM before you start hiring even more workers to mess with this VAT thing, first you need to reorganize the complete lack of efficiency in the way the government departments and corporations are going about collecting unpaid taxes and monies in the billion dollar range already owed but going uncollected by the government.

Both the remaining unpaid in the many millions of dollars on the books over at BEC and for the many unknown millions, not even trying to be collected on outstanding property taxes, are just two perfect examples of why we don't need more taxes but improved efficiency in going after those that are getting away with not paying what they owe the government?

The VAT system is a proven failure. The government need to implement Income Tax on single persons earning over $50,000 and married couples earning over $75,000 (with a percentage scale progression for earning intervals). This way these same politicians and millionaires in our country can be held accountable for the money the make (scam and steal) from us poor individuals.

I am by no means well off and I believe that this is the best solution for our country.

I am hoping that politics and personal interests can be put aside, and investment opportunities such as this can be considered based on merit and sustainability. The promise of jobs alone should not be the only consideration for us to hand over our land and resources to persons promising us a pie in the sky. Hopefully, this project is more than a sham to enrich a few at the expense of the masses. I would love to see it materialize only if it is beneficial to all concerned.
