Basketball, bodybuilding national teams won’t get full funding

THEY won’t get the full funding, but the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture will make a contribution to the Bahamas Basketball Federation and the Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation as they prepare to send their national teams off in the next few weeks.

BBF needs to secure at least $80,000

Bahamas Bowl: Blazers take title to UAB

THE University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers, the athletic programme that features Bahamian star Sydney Clarke on their women’s tennis team, came back to town on Friday and took home the 2022 HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl football title. The Blazers, with the go-ahead touchdown from Jermaine Brown Jr on 4th-and-1 with one minute and 33 seconds left, held on as Rennard Ellis tackled Jalen Walker at the 1-yard line on the final play of the game that was sealed with kicker Matt Quinn booting in the extra point for a 24-20 win over Miami (Ohio) RedHawks at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium.

Diamond Basketball to resume Saturday training session for girls

AFTER the summer camp was called off because of the coronavirus pandemic, Terrance ‘Red Eye’ McSweeney and his Diamond Basketball Development will resume a Saturday training session for girls in honour of the late Jonique ‘Mini’ Webb. Starting on Saturday and continuing through Saturday, December 10 at the Hope Center, under the theme: “Missed, but not forgotten,” McSweeney said he will conduct free lessons for female basketball players in the private and public schools between the ages of 5-11 years between the hours of 9am and noon.

Wilson in tie for fourth place at 10th Shanghai Grand Prix

HIGH jumper Jamal Wilson, tied with two others for fourth place, was the only Bahamian to compete at the 10th Shanghai Grand Prix track and field meet after injuries to fellow competitor Donald Thomas and quartermiler Steven Gardiner kept them both out of action.

34th Mario Ford Baseball Camp underway at Windsor Park

AFTER being delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, the 34th version of the Mario Ford Baseball Camp is currently underway at Windsor Park. Despite the inclement weather on Saturday, the camp staged its second week since resuming after Prime Minister Hubert Minnis, the Competent Authority, recently reopened the parks.

BJ Murray III wins Home Run Derby

POWER hitting third baseman Bertram Murray III, coming off an impressive year in the Chicago Cubs minor league baseball organisation, capped off the first All-Bahamian final to become the first home grown player to capture the Don’t Blink Home Run Derby title. In a dramatic showdown as the fifth edition of the event returned from Paradise Island to the Montagu shores, Murray, better known as ‘Deeja,’ out-slugged Trent ‘T-Money’ Deveaux 9-8 in the final of the country’s biggest event that highlighted the majority of the players playing in the minor leagues or in college.

At the 40th edition of the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, the Italian leg of the Wanda Diamond League, which took place in the Olympic Stadium in Rome on Thursday, Strachan finished in a dead heat in the women’s 100 metres in a season’s best of 11.42 seconds, the same time as eighth place finisher Marije Van Hunenstijn of the Netherlands.
