A DAY after former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham called the Christie administration’s push to have Baha Mar liquidated a bad move, the government hit back saying provisional liquidation “was the only sensible option available”.

Clarification needed on Gibson's statement

SHANE Gibson's threat to demand every company applying for a foreigner to justify its needs before his department will issue a Labour Certificate has certainly stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment among the business community -- a section of the community that Prime Minister Christie is going to need if he wants to keep Bahamians employed.

‘Band-aid’ fears over landfill bid deadline

The eight-day tender for the New Providence landfill’s management contract was yesterday slammed as “highly irresponsible” by the attorney representing Jubilee Gardens residents impacted by the massive recent fires.

Carnival and political duplicity

RECENTLY, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Culture Michael Pintard confirmed that the FNM government will continue the PLP government’s ill-conceived carnival, but with a few changes. While I’m truly disappointed by the announcement, I’m honestly not surprised. My lack of surprise is based on the fact that I have long come to realise that many Bahamian politicians take positions on issues while in opposition that are based on convenience, not conscience. Their true position is revealed when they hold the reins of power, as is now being seen with Minister Pintard and the FNM government’s new-found position on carnival.

Oil explorer in 12-month well drill extension

The Government yesterday extended the deadline for an oil exploration company to drill its first Bahamas test well by 12 months to April 2018, giving it extra time to comply with its new regulatory regime.

The FNM quagmire

I am not and have never been an FNM member or supporter. I have long seen that entity as an unapologetic enclave for the so-called political elite and middle and upper classes. Not that anything is inherently wrong with that but the unwashed masses in the inner city areas of New Providence and Grand Bahama have always excited my public sensibilities and passion.

Bahamians warned to take care after US shootings

IN THE wake of police-related shootings in the United States that have resulted in the deaths of black men, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is urging Bahamians to be particularly careful when travelling in the US.

US was the worst prepared for virus

Viruses are older than human existence. In 1918 we had the Spanish flu which infected 500 million and killed 20 million to 50 million people. We had the SARS outbreak of 2002 to 2004. It infected 8098 and killed 774 people from China, other Asian countries, the UK (4) and Toronto, Canada. In 2014 the Ebola outbreak killed 11,315 in 5 African countries and the US. So why wasn’t the world prepared? Maybe because it was not profitable because they occur over a decade apart, but that can change.

Protocol for media

I am both trained as a journalist, but I have been engaged in the media as a radio and television talk show host for a decade and counting, so I am somewhat qualified to opine on the apparent spat between segments of the profession and the Office of the Prime Minister as it relates to access to cabinet ministers to and from meetings of the cabinet.
