I always thought that getting a degree would improve my quality of life in The Bahamas. I was told for so many years that working for government is more beneficial than the private sector. However, I've been working for the Department of Education for six long years, and still, I am waiting to be confirmed. During these six long years, I have yet to receive my first increment, and, in the meanwhile, the cost of living has gone up tremendously, leaving me to grapple with the catastrophe of improvising and sacrificing on a daily basis. During the latter part of these six long years, I had to cancel the finally attained Colina insurance because I just could not afford to pay for it. I am constantly stuck on the island where I was posted because a ticket to New Providence is a luxury that I just can not afford. I have exhausted my fortitude for being on this island, and, unfortunately, I can not survive in Nassau or afford to build because there is no progression of my employment status or salary. I can’t apply for the benefit of a paid study leave because I’ve yet to be confirmed. What am I to do? Please tell me, Government of The Bahamas; what am I to do????
