If you knew Chris you'd know he is as anti tax, anti big government as they come.
He was merely trying to be diplomatic and compromise on his core beliefs. I lived 13 years in the Bahamas and found it to more and more turning into a Communist regime of wealth distributing, "squeeze those who have some to give to those who care not to earn any" idiotic regime. Buying votes by giving away "Free" stuff, jobs, benefits is rampant in both parties. Borrowing from abroad to make jobs with the borrowed money (thus buying votes), idiotically allowing the Chinese to "gift" a sports complex, killing the economy by running a state monopoly on power generation, scaring off foreign investment by allowing the unions to blackmail, terrorize and do whatever they want with foreign investors (BTC, Atlantis, NAD) while taking unquestioned millions under the table to name a few.
It will end in the Chinese foreclosing and flooding the countries with their people. Foreigners and foreign capital disappearing, crime exploding more and complete collapse. You can't have 200% duty on tobacco and expect to collect revenue especially with porous borders, a corrupt customs department. To solve financial problems your first target must be spending cuts like in any normal household. Sell off BEC, get rid of the unions, lower duties substantially and then enforce them with stiff penalties, purge customs, bring in foreigners and rotate them to police the department. You will see duty revenue rise (if I only had to pay lets say 10% flat rate and if I cheat or smuggle face a $50,000 fine I'd not risk not paying). Fire non working and redundant government employes.
That way you lower gov payroll while growing the private sector which you can then tax within reason.
Of course none of the above will ever be implemented and the only time you will see a change when the whole crap collapse and there is a restart. Just pray to God you will not end up like Haiti.
