Ivory Coast aims to strengthen ties with the Bahamas

THE Bahamas and the Republic of Cte dIvoire discussed collaboration in the areas of tourism and financial services in a move to strengthen diplomatic ties formed almost 25 years ago.

The topoic was raised on the occasion of the Presentation of Letters of Credence by Daouda Diabat, Ambassador-Designate of the Republic Cte d’voire, to Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes.

“The Republic of Cte dIvoire and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas have enjoyed friendly and cordial ties since our establishment of diplomatic relations on June 27, 1988,” Sir Arthur noted.

He said while the history of the countries is very different, both share membership in a number of organisations, including the United Nations and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group.

“I am confident that the bilateral relations between the Bahamas and Cte dvoire can reap rewards which would mirror the same level of success derived from multilateral institutions to which our respective countries belong,” the Governor-General said.

He also expressed confidence in and admiration for the developments in that country, which in less than two years has moved from civil war to reconciliation, reconstruction, economic and social renewal, and aspirations of regional leadership.

“I note in this regard your appeal for the support of the international community of friendly countries, particularly that of the Bahamas, and assure you of our continuing solidarity.

“I shall assure that your stated interest in technical assistance and greater collaboration for deepened bilateral relations and mutual benefit in the areas of tourism and financial services will be conveyed to the appropriate authorities,” Sir Arthur said.

He said he believed that the geographic distance between the countries need not act as a deterrent, but rather, could serve as motivation to foster technical co-operation for mutual advancement.

“The skills cultivated through your service as a career diplomat will no doubt put you in good stead to carry out your responsibilities and official duties as Ambassador of Cte d’voire.

“I am confident that your distinguished academic, professional and business expertise will serve to foster relations between our two countries. You have demonstrated that you have a reinvigorated mandate and focus.

“Be assured that you will have my full support and that of my office, wherever possible,” Sir Arthur said.
