No link between incidents

TWO criminal incidents in Inagua last week involving vandalism of a government building and an attack on a Defence Force officer are not believed to be related according to Dennis Brown, Assistant Superintendent in charge of the Matthew Town Police Station.

The man who was attacked on independence day was a marine officer of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

According to Mr Brown, he was attacked on Wednesday while leaving a nightclub in the early morning house.

“He was at a nightclub and got beaten by some persons of Inagua. He was transported to New Providence the same day he was attacked because his injuries were serious.”

The officer said some suspects have been arrested and appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on Friday where they were formally charged. They were transported to New Providence where they are remanded in Her Majesty’s prison.

Mr Brown couldn’t say if the attackers knew the victim was an officer, because he wasn’t wearing his uniform.

In the second incident, the administrator’s office was vandalised when three of its windows were damaged “by some projectile, a ball-like thing which was apparently thrown through it,” according to Mr Brown.

“No one was hurt. No one was on the property,” he said, noting that police received reports about the incident on Friday.

He also noted that the administrator’s building was in the process of being renovated when it was vandalised.

Asked if the crimes could be seen as acts of intimidation towards particular residents of Inagua, Mr Brown said: “At this present time, I don’t want to speculate about the motive behind the acts.”
