A PROMINENT businessman yesterday raised concerns about BTC’s quality of service amid the attention being given to the new deal between Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) and the government.
Describing the telecommunications provider as “offering nothing but crappy service”, Dionisio D’Aguilar, Superwash president, said the government’s focus should have been on selling licences to foreign entities in order to end BTC’s monopoly.
According to Mr D’Aguilar the move would have forced BTC to not only offer its customers superior service but ensure that Bahamians were afforded the lowest rates possible.
Instead the government has wasted months of valuable time brokering a deal with CWC that will do very little to improve the lives of Bahamians, he said.
“Mr Christie can pat himself on the back but as a consumer I just don’t give a damn about it. Improve my service. I am just like most people who don’t care whether or not it is a done deal,” he said.
“The bigger issue is the dreadful quality of service. They should have been focused on how to eliminate this god awful service. It’s just awful and dreadful. There are more dead spots in Nassau and the calls are dropped frequently. They can’t accommodate the load.
“Bahamians want the attention to now be given to getting competition to force BTC to give us better service and drive the price down,” he added.

Agreed...while I agree wholeheartedly with the BTC sale and privatization, I was expecting that under private ownership the service side would improve, thinking it could not get any worse than when it was under government control. Sadly, it has gotten worse. It takes months to remedy phone line issues, and once they do fix it, in another week or two it's gone again. Deplorable.

The many warnings as to what to expect from this Company fell on deaf ears. However, the Government of the day was hell bent on concluding this dreadful deal. We can thank the retired one for the mess he left for someone else to clean up. Typical!

Sir you must blame the former Government who said on the house floor. "if you sell it to Bahamians they will mess it up in two Years. Dr. Minnins and MS. Butler were right in agreement with him. It is just what you have..I stand to be corrected but you were in agreement with the former Government on this matter.

I agree in part, as it relates to BTC's crappy service, however; i take great exception with him suggesting that the PM bring in foreign entities. Its that kind of 3rd world thinking that will always keep this country in the dark ages. I know for a fact that we have some very skilled professionals right here, that are in fact Bahamians. Trust!!!!

To be fair dropped calls is nothing exclusive to BTC. I travelled on the weekend an using a T mobile service my calls dropped like every 3 minutes. Then to get a Nassau number you had to dial three or four times before the call went through. And trying to get customer services was just as bad as BTC. Even though they answered the call more quickly everything was automated voice. So you had to go through five or six menus before you got to where you wanted to be. And guess what when you finally got to speak to the right person the call dropped!

I agree. But the trouble is most Bahamians are saying the service is fine. I have always said that the service is crap and that we need to demand more. We are so easily bought though. Anyway lets continue with the mediocrity in this country and be satisfied with the glacial progress that we make.

That's because all the police are too busy shaking down Haitians, both legal and illegal and threatening to take them out to the detention centre unless they give them all the cash they are carrying. You have scores of illegal Haitians living within blocks of Fox Hill Police station and it happens almost every day. They know the Haitians won't argue, mention the detention centre and they immediately know to offer up cash and they can walk free. Ain't no national ID card going to stop that and get these people deported.

None of you seem to remember the service that we had prior to the sale! Coverage is better and the speed is great. People have incredibly short memories!
