A 19-year-old youth is fighting for his life in hospital after he was shot multiple times during a shoot out on Arawak Cay early Saturday morning.

Officer in charge of the Central Detective Unit, Superintendent Paul Rolle, said officers from the Firearm Tracing Unit were on routine patrol in the West Bay Street area when they heard gunshots in the northern section of the Fish Fry around 3am.

“When the officers went to investigate, they met two separate groups of males armed with handguns, shooting at each other. When the men saw the officers they continued shooting. When the officers identified themselves the men fled the area in two separate vehicles headed east on Bay Street,” he said.

“Officers pursued a white Honda Accord south along Nassau Street and then intercepted them in the area of Poinciana Drive. Three persons were arrested. Another group of officers pursued a jeep headed east on West Bay Street until the vehicle pulled into the emergency section of the Princess Margaret Hospital. A 19-year-old boy was taken from the vehicle, he had multiple gunshot wounds.”

The teenage boy is listed in critical condition.

Supt Rolle said officers arrested sevens persons, including two women, in connection with the matter. Police are uncertain of the motive, but Supt Rolle said police believe there was an argument between two men which sparked the shooting incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 911 or 919, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS.

Investigations continue.
