Grand Bahama Shipyard Breakfast Club. - Last month, the staff at Grand Bahama Shipyard joined the ‘Breakfast Club’ in which supporters pledge to donate $5 each month to providing breakfast for children at the Grand Bahama Children’s Home and they recently made their first official donation.

Ed Pavey, director of technical, planning and IT at GBS, said, “When I first received the call for help from Christine Van Der Linde for immediate assistance to the Children’s Home last month, it was with great pleasure that I donated to the cause. Afterwards, Christine came up with the idea of the ‘Breakfast Club’ which she implemented at her office. I thought it was such a fantastic idea that I asked my employees if they wanted to join. Again, to my pleasure, they instantly offered their pledge of support each month and for many more to come.”

If you’re interested in starting a Breakfast Club programme at your company, contact the Grand Bahama Children’s Home at 352-7852 or on their website via http://www.gbchildrenshome.com/contact/. All donations are always welcome as the home cares for the neglected and abused children of Grand Bahama. With 50% of its funding from Government the balance is raised from the community.

Highgrove Singers. - In their annual summer choral presentation, the Highgrove Singers, under the direction of Adrian A W Archer will present “Then Sings My Soul, a concert of Sacred Hymnody” tonight at 8pm and on Sunday, at 5pm, at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Kirk, Shirley Street. “We are very excited about this particular concert,” said Archer. “The programme has been designed to showcase the depth of Sacred Hymns in our religious traditions and the many ways those tunes have been interpreted by composers old and new.”

Now in their 18th year, the Highgrove Singers began as a small group determined to promote music, dance and dramatic works through their umbrella organisation Highgrove Productions. In their very first year of existence, the group won the DANSA award for its production of the Caribbean musical “Once On This Island”. Since that time, the singers have performed at a number of concerts, liturgical services (including weddings and funerals) and have been the guest choir at number choral workshops in the community.

Appearing as guest soloist during the concert will be Norma Ashe, Mezzo Soprano, who, along with Soprano, Candace Bostwick, will lead “Choral Reflections On Amazing Grace” written for the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. Raymond Antonio and Lee Callender are the accompanist for the concert.

Tickets for the concert, priced at $20, may be obtained from members of the choir or from the box office at St George’s Anglican Church, Montrose Avenue (322-1139 or 325-8997).
