VAT on charity purchases

EDITOR, The Tribune.

VAT. The Salvation Army Thrift shop has been adding VAT to every purchase made at their shop, including clothing, books and other useful items. The reason given is that as they sell new mops, everything must be taxed. The mops are made by blind people, and the profits are used by The Salvation Army for charitable purposes. All other items sold are donated.

It is shocking that poor people should have to pay VAT on their purchases. I hope that there is some way to correct this deplorable state.
