TWO American tourists were treated in hospital yesterday for minor injuries after the moped they were driving hit a pothole on the Eastern Road, sending them crashing to the pavement near the Family Guardian Corporate Centre.

According to passers-by, the motorists – tourists from Colorado on their first trip to the Bahamas – were reportedly headed west on the Eastern Road sometime around 11.30am.

As they neared Shirley Street, they hit the first of two potholes in the road, causing them to lose control of the moped and ultimately crash.

The Tribune understands that the tourists were trying to make their way back to their cruise ship, as they were scheduled to board at 1.30pm.

When The Tribune arrived on the scene, the tourists were on the grassy median separating Eastern Road and Shirley Street, surrounded by various concerned passers-by.

They did not appear to have life threatening injuries, however they had visible cuts and abrasions from the fall.

One concerned passer-by told The Tribune that he was driving behind the couple heading to work when he saw them suddenly lose control of the moped.

“As soon as I came around the curve I saw them, seems like they hit the pothole, then they started swerving on the road and then came a few feet up, hit the sidewalk,” he told The Tribune. “After that they both fell and both ended up with a number of injuries. The lady had a big gash at the bottom of her foot. She had a lot of scrapes about the body. Her husband had the same, not as bad as she was – at least he could move around, but he had gashes on his knee and scrapes about his body.”

In December of last year, Works Minister Philip “Brave” Davis said he was unaware of complaints of numerous potholes in the Montagu/Village Road area but urged motorists to lodge their concerns with the ministry.

Montagu MP Richard Lightbourn has told The Tribune that he has been made aware of the poor road conditions and has on a number of occasions contacted the Ministry of Works concerning the issue.
