KEN Perigord, a well-known Bahamian businessman and benefactor, died on Monday afternoon at his home of cancer. He was 68.

A statement from the family confirmed the peaceful passing of “a giant of a man, a patriot, and a nation builder” surrounded by family and friends.

At the height of his career, Mr Perigord owned and operated three Shell service stations. As President of the Bahamas Petroleum Retailers Association he was a strong advocate for the local service station owners and ensured their fair treatment by the government as well as the international oil companies. His name later became synonymous with Christmas in the Bahamas as he was, at one point, the largest retailer of Christmas trees in the country.

Kenneth Vernon Perigord grew up in Nassau, in the Valley, and was a diehard fan and supporter of the Valley Boys Junkanoo group. He lead annual fundraising initiatives for the Ranfurly Homes for Children and, as an former amateur athlete, supported Bahamian athletics and graciously sponsored many Bahamian athletes who have gone on to compete at the highest levels in the world.

During his retirement, Mr Perigord shared his passion for ‘golden oldies’ music by hosting popular weekly radio shows on Power 104.5 FM, Love 97 FM and later, Star 106.5 FM, a station he helped found. He was a devout Anglican and a devoted father.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
