WEATHER experts are warning that the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is poised to be an above average one, with two to four major hurricanes expected.

Chief Meteorological Officer at the Bahamas Department of Meteorology Arnold King noted a normal season would have 12 storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

It is reported that Colorado State University has forecasted 16 tropical systems, eight hurricanes, four major hurricanes this upcoming season. Meanwhile, weather service Accuweather predicted 14-18 tropical storms, seven to nine hurricanes, and two to four major hurricanes.

Mr King noted there has been an increase in hurricane intensity over the past few years and encouraged the public to do pre-season preparation.

“It doesn’t matter if you have an above-average season or below-average season,” he said. “You could have one major hurricane or one hurricane and that’s the hurricane that could strike The Bahamas. If you remember 1992, that was a below-average season and we had Hurricane Andrew that was the first named hurricane of the season and took a beeline directly to The Bahamas.

“We always ask Bahamians or residents to do the same thing every year. Start your pre-season preparation and prepare the same way for each time. Whether you have a low average season or above-average season you have to prepare the same.”

He said another prediction will be released in May and June.

Mr King said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is aware of the prediction and the agency will lead the way in getting the word out on preparations.

Hurricane season is June 1 through November 30.
