Immigration Dept role in operation

THE Department of Immigration in Grand Bahama recently played a “pivotal role” in the launch of Operation Turquesa, a global Interpol-led operation targeting suspected facilitators and participants in human smuggling.

The operation took place between November 23-December 3, according to a press release from the department.

The operation resulted in the arrest of three Dominican, two Ecuadorian and seven Haitian nationals for various infractions of the Immigration Act.

All subjects were prosecuted for their various infractions and fines were subsequently paid as ordered by a local magistrate.

The foreigners were taken to the Carmichael Road Detention Centre to await deportation to their respective home countries.
