Legal blunders

EDITOR, The Tribune.

It’s unfortunate that we have the burden of an Attorney General and his staff both of whom appear to be clueless and possibly inept.

It was recently announced by the learned Attorney General that The Bahamas had been black listed on at least one occasion by European financial watchdogs because functionaries within his office and other governmental agencies had supplied them with the wrong email site !

Is this believable, fellow Bahamians, in this day and age? In my opinion this is nothing short of gross negligence: ineptness and managerial input. The blacklisting has caused our country to look like a third world nation and negativity impacted our international credit ratings.

The AG appeared to be so casual and flippant about this error! He did not even accept direct or personal blame for whatever went down. Why am I not surprised?. This seems to be yet another example of the modus operandi of this legal phenomenon.

When the FNM came to power they went after three senior members of the former Christie administration with great fanfare. The AG imported some Queen counsel from the United Kingdom to lead the prosecution. Two of the cases have been disposed in favour of the accused.

The AG has yet to tell us the legal costs incurred by taxpayers in funding cases that I told them were doomed to fail. Why the secrecy? Any government must be fiscally accountable.

The AG probably will not be shuffled at this late stage, but, it is my opinion that he and his team have not served the nation well. Where is the fabled Freedom of Information Act? What’s happening with scores of outstanding claims by Bahamians for compensation for land compulsorily acquired by successive administrations?

We have lost several high profiled human rights court cases and the administration has been ordered to pay out multiple millions to former inmates and other litigants. In my view this has been the worst of the worst.

Not excusing the AG or his staff for their continued bungling, but we were a third world Nation and considered as such by the more civilized world long before they came on the scene.
