THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Bahamian businessman and philanthropist Sebastian Bastian has been named as The Bahamas’ Non-Resident High Commissioner to South Africa.

Mr Bastian has a number of successful business ventures and is the chairman of the Wyyse Technologies Group, the Verizon Media Group and the Brickell Management Group. He is also the CEO of Playtech Systems Limited.

“A recognised pioneer and innovator in the world of business, technology, media, telecommunications, gaming, real estate and construction industries, High Commissioner (designate) Bastian is passionate about philanthropy, especially as it relates to inspiring and supporting Bahamian entrepreneurs to advance national economic and sustainable development,” a press release from the ministry noted.

“He is committed to the empowerment of Bahamians through needs-based financial contributions and dedicated community initiatives. As one of High Commissioner (designate) Bastian’s primary community initiatives, the OWN Bahamas Foundation established in 2014 is focused on offering entrepreneurial opportunities for persons who have new and exciting ideas within existing or new industries.”

The release said Mr Bastian will bring his knowledge of Africa, and his particular knowledge of South Africa, to the post.

“His understanding of the dynamics of the global economy and The Bahamas’ development will no doubt result to the benefit of all Bahamian nationals,” the statement said.

The Bahamas and South Africa established diplomatic relations in 1994, during which time the friendship between both countries has been strong and cordial. The Bahamas and South Africa share many similar views and collaborate effectively in the global arena, particularly at the United Nations, Agencies of the United Nations and the Commonwealth, the ministry said.

Mr Bastian is expected to present his letters of credence to the President of South Africa at a date to be determined in the near future.
