THE chair of the Progressive Liberal Party’s Bimini constituency association is confident party members will unite ahead of the by-election despite the council meeting the PLP had in New Providence on Friday.

When chief passport officer Kingsley Smith was ratified for the West Grand Bahama and Bimini by-selection, some Shane Gibson supporters insisted they would not vote in the by-election, predicting the governing party would lose the seat.

Kitty Saunders, chair of the PLP’s Bimini Branch, believes PLP members will put their differences aside.

“I know a lot of supporters was split with who they wanted to support, whether it was Mr Gibson’s side and some was on Mr Kingsley’s side, and some persons were not happy with the decision,” she said. “Going forward, because the decision was made, we have to now accept it and try our best to win back the seat for the PLP.”

“I believe the supporters will come together and give Mr Smith their support because, like I said, we as PLPs have our differences, we fight it out, and then when the fight is over, like a family, we come back together.”

Ms Saunders declined to give her personal opinion on the party’s choice. She had previously said that she supports Mr Gibson.

She said she believes Mr Smith will be a good representative.

Bishop Ricardo Grant was ratified as the Free National Movement candidate for the by-election.

Traditionally, West End has been critical of the PLP’s success in the constituency. FNM leaders hope to keep the margins small there and outdo other candidates in the remaining communities.

“Persons know that there is no other candidate or no other party right now that will do anything in Bimini or even in Grand Bahama, but the PLP,” Ms Saunders said.

“Because right now the PLP is the governing party, and any other person come along is basically like a waste of vote because they cannot do nothing for our constituency.”

A date for the by-election has not been announced. However, it must be held by November 25, according to acting Parliamentary Commissioner Arthur Taylor.

The PLP have become such a disgusting party. They cannot unite the country with their extreme prejudice towards non stalwarts. You either support them openly and financially or you're their enemy and will get NOTHING. An absolutely horrible stance.
