A MAN was acquitted yesterday of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in 2024, while the case against his bus driver co-accused, who is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl that same day, will continue next week.
Shaveney Taylor, 20, was present as Justice Jeannine Weech-Gomez instructed a jury to find him not guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse.
The direction came after the jury heard more than a week of testimony in the matter. Justice Weech-Gomez did not tell the jury the reason for her direction.
Taylor was told he was free to go as long as he had no other matters before the court.
Meanwhile, Taylor’s co-accused, Tremiko Dean, 27, was told that his trial on two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse will continue next week, when the defence is expected to begin its case.
Dean, a bus driver, is accused of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl twice between January 2, 2024, and March 10, 2024, in New Providence.
Taylor had been accused of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl on March 10, 2024.
One of the alleged assaults took place at one of the defendants’ residences, while another allegedly occurred in a bus parked at a gas station.
A medical report said the 14-year-old complainant was admitted to the hospital on March 11, 2024, and treated with antiretrovirals.
The complainant’s mother previously testified that the girl remained in the hospital for three months.
The mother also claimed that, to her knowledge, the child had a vaginal infection.
Shaneka Carey and Betty Wilson are prosecuting the case.
Moses Bain represented Dean, while Keith Seymour represented Taylor.
