A MAN has been charged with murder in the shooting of a 24-year-old man near Bay Street and Parliament Street last month, an attack whose aftermath was captured in a graphic video widely shared on social media.

Prosecutors allege Remeldo Brown, 31, shot and killed Alistair Major on September 2.

Brown appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Ancella Evans and was not required to enter a plea. He was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until January 21, 2027, when he is due to be served with a voluntary bill of indictment, sending his case to the Supreme Court. He was told he can apply for bail in the higher court.

Police said officers received reports shortly after 2.30am of an unresponsive man who had been shot in the area. Initial investigations indicated that Major became involved in a verbal altercation with another man, who allegedly produced a firearm and shot him. Police said the suspect fled in a white Japanese vehicle, travelling south along Parliament Street.

In the roughly 40-second video, Major is seen lying motionless on the pavement with a bloody head as people check his pulse, shake him and try to position his body. People shout and curse as they try to help. At one point, bystanders appear to turn him onto his side before returning him to his back. One man sits beside him with his head down as others gather around.

Another video circulating online appears to show Major alive at a nightclub, wearing what seem to be the same clothes, holding a drink and displaying money. It was alleged online that the footage captured some of his final moments.

Police said Major was wearing an electronic monitoring device in connection with a serious offence but did not say what it was. The Nassau Guardian reported in July 2024 that Major had been charged in connection with the attempted murder of Rayshaun Rolle.

Inspector Deon Barr prosecuted, while Levan Johnson represented Brown.
