Education ministry launches foundation to attract private investment in schools

THE Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has announced plans to establish an independent non-profit foundation to attract private sector investment and philanthropic support for education, as part of its wider efforts to transform the country's education system.

The Bahamas Education, Science and Technology (BEST) Foundation will serve as a vehicle for businesses, charitable organisations, the Bahamian diaspora and other partners to contribute resources towards improving schools and expanding opportunities for students.

The initiative was announced yesterday by Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education Senator Keenan Johnson, who was joined by Director of Education Dominique McCartney-Russell.

According to the ministry, the foundation will operate independently with its own board of directors and provide a structured, accountable mechanism for attracting additional financial and other support for education.

The organisation is intended to complement government spending rather than replace it, with a focus on improving learning environments, expanding educational opportunities and supporting initiatives that respond to the needs of students, teachers and schools throughout the archipelago.

Senator Johnson said the initiative would allow a broader cross-section of society to participate in strengthening the education system.

"The BEST Foundation creates an opportunity for Corporate Bahamas, philanthropic organisations, our diaspora and Bahamians from all walks of life to become active partners in strengthening education in our country," he said.

"We have often said that education is everybody’s business. Today, we are taking a significant step towards putting that belief into practice through meaningful action, partnership and investment."

The foundation forms part of the ministry's Revolution in Education agenda, being advanced under Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Science and Technology Chester Cooper.

Senator Johnson said the proposed transformation would require sustained investment and collaboration beyond the public sector.

"That transformation requires vision, but it also requires resources, partnerships, commitment and, above all, people who believe that the future of our country is worth investing in," he said.

The foundation's official launch is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, with a live broadcast on ZNS beginning at 8pm, immediately following the national news.

During the event, the ministry will also unveil its new strategic plan and corporate identity, which officials say will establish a roadmap for the education system's development.

Further details about the foundation's priorities, partnerships and proposed initiatives are expected to be released at the launch.

The ministry has invited individuals, businesses and organisations interested in supporting the foundation to contact Best@moe.edu.bs for information about contributing or becoming involved.
