A 36-YEAR-OLD Indian man died after becoming trapped beneath metal plates in the engine room of a vessel travelling from Grand Bahama to New Providence on Saturday night.
Police said they were alerted shortly after 11pm by an official from the shipping company, who reported that an employee had been seriously injured in an onboard accident and later died.
The vessel arrived in New Providence around 7am on Sunday.
Investigators boarded the ship alongside officials from the Bahamas Maritime Authority, Ministry of Health and Wellness, Bahamas Customs and Department of Immigration.
Police said preliminary information indicated that security personnel were alerted to an accident in the engine room while the vessel was travelling to New Providence.
When they arrived, they reportedly found two employees assisting the 36-year-old, who had become trapped and severely injured beneath several metal plates.
Additional crew members helped free him and medical assistance was administered, but he died from his injuries.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
