Bahamas First elects attorney to its Board

Bahamas First Holdings elected attorney Pamela Klonaris to its Board of Directors at an annual general meeting (AGM) that saw the general insurer mark its 30th anniversary.

The BISX-listed firm said its September 24 AGM recognised the three decades that had passed since Bahamas First Holdings was formed in 1996, incorporating Bahamas First General Insurance Company (BFG) and Nassau Underwriters Agency (NUA) as wholly-owned subsidiaries.

The group later expanded into the Cayman Islands, acquiring the majority equity interest in an insurance company that was subsequently rebranded as Cayman First Insurance Company (CFI).

Bahamas First said subsequent milestones have included its introduction of First Response, providing on-scene claims assistance following motor accidents; the development of First Online, which expands customers’ access to digital insurance services; and becoming the first Bahamian general insurance company to have its financial strength assessed by global credit rating agency, AM Best Company.

Alison J. Treco, Bahamas First Holdings chair, said the 30th anniversary provided an opportunity to recognise both the group’s roots and the responsibility to continue moving it forward.

Meanwhile, shareholders elected Pamela Klonaris to the Board of Directors. Ms Klonaris is a Bahamian attorney with more than 36 years of experience in the financial services sector, and has a background in commercial and corporate law, financial services regulation and corporate governance.

She has held senior leadership and Board posts in the legal and financial services sectors throughout her career, and is a former commissioner at the Insurance Commission of The Bahamas.

Ms Treco said: “We are pleased to welcome Pamela to the Board. Her legal expertise, financial services experience and understanding of the insurance regulatory and governance environment will add valuable perspective as we continue to strengthen the Group for the years ahead.”
